HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) –
If you’ve been to Hattiesburg, then you know about Leatha’s Bar-B-Que Inn.
“Being from California, I keep hearing about this business in the south of this really like a phenomenon of this barbeque joint,” said ABC Television host Dan Vega. “I mean celebrities from Los Angeles come all the way here to get barbeque.”
When Vega stopped in Hattiesburg a year ago, he had some award winning barbeque, but aside from that he was able to meet Leatha Jackson.
“I got to listening to her story of starting her business with two dollars in her pocket and we decided at that time we had to have her on the show,” said Vega.
On Wednesday, not only did Vega come back to Hattiesburg to do an episode on Leatha’s Bar-B-Que, but he also helped publish the book If These Fields Could Talk.
“It’s a great honor, this is something my mother always wanted a book written by her,” said Owner of Leatha’s Bar-B-Que Inn and Daughter, Bonnie Jackson. “I applaud him for coming to Hattiesburg Mississippi and putting small businesses like Leatha’s Bar-B-Que on the map,” said Mayor of Hattiesburg Johnny DuPree. “It’s a great legacy for a mother who started this and who at one time said she didn’t want her kids to work for anybody. She wanted them to be entrepreneurs, she wanted them to work for themselves and they’re continuing that legacy and that’s a wonderful legacy to leave for your children.” Although Leatha passed away in September, thanks to help from the show “Tuesdays with Dan” and Indigo River Publishing her legacy will definitely continue. “I’d like to say thank you to Leatha and her family they do a tremendous service not only to this community but for many communities beyond here,” said Publisher of Indigo River Publishing Adam Tillinghast. “I don’t think they’ll ever truly understand how far their words are getting and how many people they’re impacting, and our company is one of them.” The episode on Leatha’s Bar-B-Que Inn is expected to air in two weeks on “Tuesdays with Dan”. The book can be purchased at the restaurant or on Amazon. For more on “Tuesdays with Dan” click HERE.
